World Bank to Provide $700 Million for New Development Projects in Sudan

World Bank Mission Chief Maryam Salem, the Regional Director for Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, announced that the Bank is preparing to fund new projects worth roughly $700 million over the next three years. The commitment was revealed during a briefing to Finance Minister Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, attended by senior officials from the ministry and the World Bank’s Sudan team.

Salem reaffirmed the World Bank’s ongoing support for Sudan’s major development priorities. She said the financing will target recovery and reconstruction efforts, with a technical advisory team scheduled to arrive soon to work alongside government institutions. The Bank’s priorities—health, agriculture, social protection, youth programs, economic reforms, renewable energy, electricity, digital transformation, and telecommunications—align closely with the government’s stated agenda.

The mission also reviewed ongoing World Bank–funded projects, particularly in education and health, whose financing was not interrupted despite Sudan’s difficult circumstances. Salem noted that these programs remain crucial in sustaining essential services.

Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim stressed that health, water, recovery, and reconstruction remain at the top of the government’s agenda. He called for strengthened coordination with humanitarian organizations and praised the World Bank’s continued engagement. He also highlighted several ready feasibility studies, especially in agriculture, which he said could be activated through new partnerships.
