Sudan Moves to Update Agricultural and Irrigation Legal Framework

In Port Sudan, the Legal Administration organized a meeting to initiate the review of agricultural and irrigation law projects, under the chairmanship of Legal Advisor Dr. Sulafa Al-Bayli. The gathering included key figures from agricultural production, seed management, planning, training, plant protection, and civil society organizations.

Dr. Al-Bayli outlined the purpose of the committee, explaining that it was created by a ministerial decree to assess and modernize existing agricultural and irrigation laws. She stressed that this step is essential to keep pace with evolving regional and international regulations.

Agricultural laws, she noted, play a vital role in ensuring food security by organizing agricultural activities, preserving natural resources, defining land rights, encouraging sustainable practices, and preventing environmental degradation. They also provide a framework for regulating markets and supporting farmers.

At the conclusion of the meeting, members agreed on a phased plan to begin reviewing five of the twenty-two existing laws. The broader objective is to strengthen the legal foundation of Sudan’s agricultural sector and improve its overall sustainability and efficiency.
