Sudanese cultural and literary circles are mourning the loss of novelist, short story writer, and journalist Muhammad Khair Abdallah, President of the Sudanese Story Club, who passed away in Kosti on February 22, 2025, due to cholera. His final words — “I have cholera… I can’t” — reflected the tragic epidemic that continues to claim lives in the White Nile.
Throughout his career, Abdallah enriched the Sudanese library with novels, short stories, and biographies that captured the struggles and hopes of his people. Among his notable works are The Novel of Abd’s Wedding, The Passion of the Soul, Memoirs of a Dead Poet, and The Night the President Killed Me. His writings were published widely across Sudanese and Arab newspapers, with some translated into English and French.
Friends and colleagues remembered him as a man of conviction who believed in culture as a foundation for national advancement and peaceful coexistence. For years, he supported the revival of the Sudanese Story Club, mentoring young writers and encouraging them to use literature as a tool for change.
At a memorial evening organized in Kosti, speakers recalled his humanity, humility, and ever-present smile. They described Abdallah as more than a writer—he was a cultural beacon who devoted his life to literature and left behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
