Sudan’s Embassy in South Africa Urges Global Sanctions on UAE Over Support for RSF Militia

The Embassy of Sudan in South Africa has called for international sanctions and an arms embargo against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), accusing it of backing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia responsible for atrocities in Sudan. Speaking at a press conference in Pretoria, Ambassador Osman Abu Fatima Adam said the militia, formerly known as the Janjaweed, had imposed a war on the Sudanese people through deliberate ethnic violence and defiance of peace agreements.

Ambassador Abu Fatima presented video and photographic evidence of mass killings in El Fasher, describing the humanitarian situation as “catastrophic” after a prolonged siege marked by 267 attacks, including the alleged use of banned weapons. He said covert arms transfers from the UAE through air routes in Libya, Somalia, and Sudan enabled the militia’s advances and accused the international community of ignoring clear violations of international law.

The Ambassador also condemned what he called “media complicity” in spreading false narratives financed by the militia’s foreign sponsors, warning that disinformation had shielded perpetrators from accountability. He accused the UAE of trying to establish a parallel government in Nyala and of “buying silence” from the global community, repeating similar tactics seen in Libya.

Ambassador Abu Fatima urged global powers and the African Union to classify the militia and its sponsors as terrorist entities, hold those responsible for war crimes accountable, and support Sudan’s efforts toward peace and justice. He appealed to South Africa to continue supporting Sudan diplomatically and to assist Sudanese refugees stranded in the country until stability returns.
