WHO Launches Mission in Sudan to Review Immunization Surveillance

A delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO) has arrived in Sudan to assess the nation’s disease surveillance system within the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). The review aims to ensure Sudan’s readiness to detect and respond to vaccine-preventable diseases.

According to Ismail Al-Adani, Acting Director of Primary Health Care, the evaluation teams will conduct four-day field visits across multiple states including the Red Sea, Northern State, River Nile, Khartoum, Gezira, White Nile, Sennar, Gedaref, Kassala, and Blue Nile. Their work will cover state health headquarters, localities, and reporting centers. The mission is expected to gauge the sensitivity of Sudan’s monitoring system, highlight gaps, and recommend corrective measures.

Findings will be consolidated in Kassala during a workshop where teams will propose an action plan, with WHO providing technical assistance. Further evaluations will be carried out in Darfur, North Kordofan, and South Kordofan at a later stage.

Al-Adani noted that this mission is part of a standardized WHO initiative implemented across all member states of the Eastern Mediterranean Region, with Sudan actively participating.
