Sudan’s Crisis to Dominate High-Level Talks at UN Gathering

The world’s attention will once again turn to New York this September as the UN General Assembly opens its 80th annual session on September 9. From September 23 to 27, global leaders will engage in high-level meetings before the session concludes on the 29th.

Sudan’s protracted war, now in its third year, will be one of the Assembly’s most urgent topics. Diplomats say it will stand alongside the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine and major international debates over peace, security, climate change, corruption, and the 2030 development agenda.

Preparations for Sudan’s participation are well advanced. A source told Al-Muhaqiq that the Foreign Ministry has coordinated closely with embassies and partners to finalize the country’s position papers and speeches. The Sudanese mission in New York has also received numerous requests for bilateral talks, although the head of the delegation has yet to be revealed.

Given the widespread humanitarian devastation, including atrocities blamed on the RSF, besieged cities, and disrupted aid deliveries, analysts say Sudan’s voice at the UN will carry unusual weight this year.
